Extension of paid Parent’s Leave and Benefit to 7 weeks in Ireland
Parents can avail of 7 weeks' paid Parent’s Leave and Benefit
As of 1 July, parents of children under the age of 2 in Ireland can take 7 weeks of paid leave under the Parent’s Leave and Benefit scheme. Previously, only 5 weeks could be taken through this specific leave that in 2019 was added to parental leave in order to align with the European Work Life Balance Directive.
Parent’s Benefit is available to employed and self-employed parents with the required number of social insurance (PRSI) contributions and is paid at a rate of €250 a week.
The quickest and easiest way to apply for Parent’s Benefit is online via MyWelfare.ie.
The legislation governing parent’s leave is the Parent's Leave and Benefit Act 2019, as amended.
